Designed by a guitarist for guitarists.....

“I don’t do sales pitches. I listen to what a guitarist wants. I, then, go to work.”

“What sounds great in the living room, studio, bedroom (or music store!) is going to sound very different in a live, gigging situation.”

Just wanted to write a little about the Pappas amplifier I’ve owned now for a little over five years. I bought this amplifier to replace my Marshall Super Lead as it was having some issues and the reliability was not where it needed to be. It has since been fixed and is good as new, although I still play my Pappas amp much more than the Marshall, even with the Master volume mod. This amp is so vibrant and touch sensitive, it really is a boutique amplifier in every sense or the word, without the inflated pricing. Simplicity in design, hand-wired, and super light due to its aluminum chassis…this amp really is practical and serves me well playing in a small band setting at church as well as in club setting where is really sings! The amp is crystal clear at low to medium volumes with a warmth of the early blackface Fenders and sparkle reminiscent of the Vox AC30. This amp has a LOT of headroom for 22 watts! Once pushed to about 12 o’clock and higher, the amp really comes to life and transforms into the ultimate rock’n roll amplifier, similar to my Marshall Super Lead cranked up. It is very responsive and super tight to accommodate any style I want to play. It takes pedals very well! I feel I really scored with this amp! I knew it would be a challenge to find something I could play in lieu of my Marshall – this amp is it! I was able to find a purple Mesa Boogie cab that matches in dimensions and color and that combination really is all I need for just about anything I’m likely to encounter. I was lucky to find a Gator roadcase that fits the amp perfectly, snug as a bug! I know words are difficult to sing the praises of this amp without actually hearing firsthand – if you’re curious, PM me and I can send over a couple recordings where you can hear this thing firsthand. Very well done Cody…you have a 100% satisfied customer here!

Thanks to Jon Cody Pappas at Pappas Amps for finishing my new KP-5. It’s a 50 Watt single channel tube amp, paired through a front-ported, closed back 1×12 cabinet. This is the amp I have been looking for! Traded in my Mesa/Boogie for this, and I couldn’t be happier!!! This thing wails!!!

I have owned my Pappas amp for over ten years now. The amp is a single channel 50 watt head with a 2×12 cabinet. It still looks and sounds great even after seeing me through high school gigs at house parties and crawfish boils, college gigs in jazz combos and pit orchestras, and the inevitable “alumni blues” gigs for my dog in my living room. I’m sure many of the reviews you read will focus on the sound itself, and of course the amps sound fantastic, but as I feel I’d give an inadequate description of the sound, I’d like to instead highlight a couple of the more abstract advantages. I’d also recommend playing through one yourself as that is the only way you can truly experience the quality of care that Cody puts into them. That’s why my first point of advantage is the man himself. Through the purchase of my amp I had the pleasure of meeting Cody. He is kind, knowledgeable, and open to discuss his work with anyone that’s interested. Although he cares deeply about his designs, he is not precious about changing something in the name of improvement or tailoring aspects to an individual. In fact, the build documents (which I still have) explicitly state the amp was designed to be modified easily. Just last year he swapped speakers in my cabinet and updated the circuitry when I told him about a particular feel I was after. He’s happy to work with you to get the sound you want even when your ideal sound changes down the line. To me, Cody’s involved approach regarding the satisfaction of fellow musicians is enough to justify double the asking price. If you already know him, I’d be willing to bet you just nodded your head in agreement (maybe even spoke out loud). If you don’t know him and are considering buying one of his amps, I can assure you that you will feel at ease throughout the process no matter at which point you find yourself in your musical development.
Which brings me to the next point, the amp will make you a better player. That may seem like a bold statement, perhaps a sales pitch you would get from an overeager employee at Guitar Center with a tenuous grasp on the idea of personal space, but I will do my best to explain (from a safe distance). The clarity, sensitivity, and “essentials only” presentation of Cody’s amps offer any musician who plugs into them the gift of honest self assessment. There is no hiding when you play through one. I don’t care what ad you saw on YouTube, unfortunately, there is no shortcut to learning how to play an instrument with confidence. However, there are tools to help you along the unending journey, and I can safely say that my Pappas amp has been invaluable to me as one such tool. Playing through it is like looking in the mirror each morning. I don’t always look my best and I’ll never look like Brad Pitt, but at least I have the opportunity to look at an accurate reflection of myself and say, “Yup, that’s me.”

I have gigged this amp hard for over three years (maybe four, time gets away). It is a perfect pedal platform, and can stand on its own just plugged straight in. I told Cody when I first got it that I swore I could hear parts of notes that I never heard before with other amps. I can’t praise it enough.

I hope this is the last amp you ever need to buy.
